Movie Review of "Love Khichdi"

Starring: Randeep Hooda, Sada, Rituparna Sengupta, Sonali Kulkarni, Divya Dutta, Kalpana Pandit, Jesse Randhawa and Riya Sen
Director: Srinivas Bhashyam
Rating: * ½

Lifted from a copy of popular American TV series Kitchen Confidential, Love Khichdi is about a casanova chef Vir (Randeep) Hooda chef who is on a bed hopping spree and is busy fantasizing about the many women in his life.

Whether it is male hating kaamwali bai (Sonali) or his bookstore running 'intellectual' colleague (Rituparna) or his adolescent neighbour, it doesn’t matter for Vir.

When a man-eater girl Nafisa (Kalpana) uses and ditches him, he feels the hurt. His pretty receptionist colleague Sandhya (Sada) who is in love with him and is trying to woo him finally proposes to him but the incorrigible flirt that Vir is, hesitates. Hurt, Sandhya walks out on him.

Finally, then he realizes the true worth of his friendship with her. Relenting upon his behaviour he now goes to woo back Sandhya.

The film could have been a time pass no holds barred sex comedy but fails. Randeep is no hot stud that every single women he encounters would go panting for him.

Secondly, lack of imagination on the part of writers and the treatment style of director makes it a big YAWN!!

Sitting through the second half is a pain as it takes a helluva a lot of time to come to the point which surprise surprise we already know that true love is always around us and we never know its worth…blah blah blah. To be fair, Pritam has given some peppy tunes.

As far as acting goes, Randeep does try and carries off a few scenes well. Amongst the actresses only Sonali Kulkarni and Divya Dutta impress.

Sada looks extremely pretty but needs to improve her dialogue delivery. Riya Sen does what she knows best – exposing. Saurabh Shukla is just about okay.

Forget this film and watch a cookery show with a pretty host/hostess instead

Movie Review of "Daddy Cool"

Starring Suniel Shetty, Aftab Shivdasani, Javed Jaffry, Rajpal Yadav, Prem Chopra, Arti Chabria, Kim Sharma, Sophie Chowdhary
Directed by K Murali Mohan Rao
Rating: * ½

Why remake a shoddy, tasteless British comedy with enough scataological satire to attire a miniature village of zombies and ogres?

Why be so fixated on Western entertainment when we’ve so much literary and pulp talent out here?

Just leave aside these vital questions and focus on the ensemble cast that sparkles with a borrowed wit. The Goan setting and the quaint rooms housing distraught emotions keep us smiling.

The setting is a Christian funeral. At times the funereal jokes have us coffin…I mean coughing in embarrassment. The dead man (Sharad Saxena, deadly in his stillness) ‘s two sons are a responsible young bespectacled householder (Shetty) and a carefree cassanova novelist (Ashish Chowdhary, suitably rakish) who flies in jetlagged just in time for Daddy Cool’s funeral.

Daddy has a secret in his closet. And that’s Rajpal Yadav, a pintsized lover. “Isska matlab tum dono gay ke bete ho, ” squeals Aarti Chabria to her screen-husband Suniel Shetty and his kid brother Ashish. Ouch, oops, whoa!!

Well well, political correctness is all about loving your funeral, no matter what it takes. Ironically after copying everything in sight in the original from from the characters to the dialogues the desi adaptors get cold feet and decide the gay lover was an imposter.

And Section 377 lived happily after.

To be fair to this fearfully feisty farce Daddy Cool makes you smile specially Aftab Shivdasani as a drugged-out goofy lover-boy. He is better than the actor who played the role originally.

Suneil Shetty as the ‘responsible’ man a little tired of shouldering family responsibilities but nonetheless determined to see the show through, is controlled and comically karmic. His climactic speech in praise of his father is rousing. Rajpal Yadav as the gay’ lover is superbly restrained.

And then there’s Sophie Chowdhary as a suitably sexy airhead in a stabd-out red dress ready to sleep with any man in a black suit as long as she gets her way.

Blessedly this farce doesn’t opt for desperate measures. It keeps it…er cool most of the way.

Rakhi Is Alive Just Cause Of Shahid

Trash talk Queen Miss. Sawant is mulling over Shahid Kapoor in her upcoming flick Dil Bole Hadippa. The reason behind all the hulla-gulla is that Shahid had saved her life during the shoot of a song sequence Discowale Kishko…

In an interview Rakhi stated, “Today I’m alive, and that is just because of Shahid. I was about to meet with a fatal accident when he came to my rescue.”

Bipasha Basu Trying To Taste Everything A Little Bit

She is known for her bold image in Bollywood, but dusky beauty Bipasha Basu will now be seen in a slew of non-commercial films like the Bengali "Shob Charitro Kalponik", "Pankh" and "Lamhaa". She insists she is not making any special attempts to change her image and would love to do more Bengali films if they are interesting.

"I like to do films that are entertainers, glamorous, fun, action and definitely realistic. There is no effort that I am putting towards an image change with non-commercial films.

I just feel that in the Hindi film industry, where you look in a particular manner, people consider your USP as something and you get a little typecast, " Bipasha told in a telephone interview from Mumbai.

"But I'm not trying to break any typecast. It's just that within the given limitations, I'm trying to push and taste everything a little bit, " she added.

Bipasha plays a Kashmiri girl in director Rahul Dholakia's "Lamhaa", has a supporting role in arthouse film "Pankh'" and in her just released Bengali film debut she plays a typical sari-wearing Bengali woman.

Asked if "Shob Charitro..." marks her entry into regional cinema, she said: "I don't like to do films where I don't understand the language; so I don't know about other regional films. I tried doing a Telugu film (2002) and a guest appearance in a Tamil movie (2005), but it was the toughest thing I've ever done.

"But Bengali films...for sure because I know the language... I'd love it if there are some interesting films or a filmmaker who would love to make one...they are more than welcome to approach me and I'd love to do it, " she added.

Produced by Big Pictures, "Shob Charitro..." has been written and directed by Rituparno Ghosh and also stars Prasenjit, Jisshu Sengupta, Pauli Dam and Sohag Sen.

The film shows the journey of Bipasha's character into the life of her late poet husband through his poetry.

"Shob Charitro..." was also screened in the Panorama Section of the 2009 Durban Film Festival and marketed at the 62nd Cannes International Film Festival.

Though it was her first Bengali venture, the 30-year-old didn't find any difficulties essaying the role.

"Ritu-da asked me to get into the typical Bengali woman mode for the character with the sari-and-blouse and body language, etc... it was not at all difficult for me as I have grown up watching my mother like that.

"For the language, it was very easy because it's definitely the Bengali I speak at home and understand. Apart from that there is also a lot of English in the film as my character speaks both, " added Bipasha, who became an overnight sensation in Bollywood with the 2003 hit "Jism".

Bipasha was all praise for the director.

"Ritu-da's films work on various levels and not just one level. When he narrated the script to me, I was really curious as to how he plans to do it because it sounded really tough. But when we shot the film and I actually performed, it was really effortless.

"He guides you well and the whole film flows and tells you a beautiful story of romance, realism, marriage and all kinds of emotions like problems with your partner and when you fall in love... and he uses poetry as a very strong tool in it, " she explained.

"Shob Charitro...", Bipasha says, isn't a commercial entertainer.

"It is very deep and very beautiful. It was very different for me too but I truly liked it and enjoyed the process of making this film, " said the actress.

Apart from "Lamha" and "Pankh", Bipasha will also be seen in "All The Best", a comic entertainer.

Rituparna SenGupta' Teacher Was Crush on Her

An unconventional face Rituparna Sen Gupta doesn’t need an introduction. Rituparna has come a long way in realistic cinema as an actor.

To have won a National Award in 1998 the best female-category for Rituparno Ghosh's Dahan, where she played Romita, a newly-wed who becomes the victim of sexual assault, explains it all for this epitome of talent.

And now, this actor is all set with her forthcoming film Love Khichdi to release this Friday, which she says is the beginning of her career in mainstream cinema, although she has already done a couple of films in the same league.

In an interview, Rituparna SenGupta talks at length about her character and future plans to make it big in B- Town.

Shed some light on your character in the film?
My character is of a Bengali girl who is an independent personality. She has got her own principles and doesn’t compromise on anything for them. She is modern, yet an introvert who knows where to draw the line.

She runs a bookshop in a hotel where she happens to meet a guy whom she starts falling for. However, she eventually loses interest as she discovers the personality of guy, and her interest level is less than the guy’s interest.

Have you ever experienced such attention in your real-life?
Yes, loads (blushes), since the school times. I was stalked by a guy, who would bunk his classes, just to give me a greeting card.

He would wait throughout the day just to get one glimpse of me. He never dared to approach me though and once when I confronted him he confessed his feelings for me.

Another one was my teacher in painting classes, he had to resign, but the fear of losing me gave him a reason to change the decision and he too actually confessed his feelings to me. But I was a teenager, a kid…those were funny days.

Why this sudden inclination towards main-stream cinema and up-beat roles like in Love Khichdi when you busy doing unconventional roles?
Be it realistic or main-stream, I personally feel Indian cinema is going through a sea of change. The films have become script-driven and after doing unconventional, in other words realistic cinema, I have a desire to explore main-stream too.

There is so much to explore in terms of roles. I am a big name in Bengali cinema, but have no ego hassles and inhibitions about Hindi. I have always banked upon my talent and hard work and will continue to do.

I honestly feel, I have a big scope in main-stream cinema and with acting as my agenda I am sure I’ll be able to make it big here as well.

Love Khichdi is a beginning where I play a conservative, polite yet today’s modern girl with whom everyone will relate. Love Khichdi is a film with which everyone will relate to, because everyone either has gone, or are, or will go through such situations in life.

It is a typical masala, yet reality driven today’s film. Love Khichdi is the beginning as I have loads to explore further.

You mentioned about the conservative, polite yet modern nature of the woman you are playing in the film, how far do you relate with the character you are in real-life, or is it poles-apart?
No I am not poles-apart; I have got loads of similarity…she is a confident yet conservative girl. Out going, yet not desperate. She knows how to balance her life which is somewhere me.

SRK is another film you have worked in? Is the film to do with the King Khan or it’s just the title that is creating hype?
(Laughs), I can’t reveal much. Hmm, SRK is just a gimmick though, but yes, the story of the film goes well with the title. It’s an emotional-comedy and I must say Vinay Pathak has done a wonderful job.

What happened to Mittal Vs Mittal…what’s the reason for the delay in the release?
Recession has taken a toll over everyone, including our industry. However, Mittal Vs Mittal is a wonderful work accomplished by Karan Razdan and the film will soon release and I am really looking forward to the response it gets.

Beside SRK and Mittal Vs Mittal, what other films are in the pipeline?
I am currently working for Avartan with Rajat Kapoor and Antara Mali and for another film- a women issue oriented film with Divya Dutta, Yashpal Sharma and Atul Kulkarni- the story of a surrogate mother and a corporate woman.

Coming back to Love Khichdi, one boy and so many girls…were you troublesome for Randeep? How was the girl gang on the sets?
Well, unfortunately, we girls don’t have a single scene together, so didn’t get an opportunity to do so. However, Randeep did not leave any stone unturned to pull the legs of his co-stars, including me.

Randeep and I were to shoot for a sensuous song in the film. I was very apprehensive, since I have never attempted something of this sort before. Randeep was making me comfortable and would always tease me for my Bengali accent.

He would come up with few Bengali words and claim to help me come out of the accent. It was a sheer pleasure to work with Randeep.

Promos are creating lot of buzz, what do you think- why should people go and watch this film?
Hoardings featuring Randeep Hooda surrounded by seven girls are enough to create a curiosity among one and all, and also as to what this film is all about. And that will give a reason for every cine-goer to vouch for this film.

It is, as I said earlier, a reality-driven film, yet very larger than life kinds, which will take the audience to the dreamy world. It’s an honest attempt by the people associated with the film, and I am quite confident about the audience liking the film.

Shilpa Shetty - Haath Khali To Hone Chahiye

Reports that Shilpa’s dad has been applying to retrieve his passport from Surat (where the document is kept because of a pending court case) so he can be in London for his daughter’s wedding has Shilpa in splits.

“The passport is certainly not meant for my wedding, please! It’s not happening in October, November, December or any of the dates that have been fixed for my wedding in the media.

Raj and I will announce the date from rooftops and invite the entire press corps to be part of the baraati when it happens. In the meanwhile please leave my father alone.”

Papa Shetty’s passport needed retrieval not for Shilpa’s wedding but for another family gathering altogether.

“It’s Raj Kundra’s birthday on September 9. Our entire collective family will be bringing in the occasion at the Maldives. That’s what my dad needed his passport for.”

On a more sober note Shilpa says, “We all respect the judiciary. But it’s very humiliating for any daughter to have her father rushing to another town for his passport. It’s even more humiliating to have erroneous media reports being put out about one’s father. He had applied for his passport a few month ago.”

As for the wedding, “There’s no reason on earth why Raj I wouldn’t want to get married at the earliest. At the moment we’ve our hands full with many new exciting ventures. We need get the space in our lives to plan and enjoy this wonderful event. Haath peele karne ke liye haath khali to hone chahiye.”

Best Kept Secret of YRF

Alyque Padamsee and Sharon Prabhakar's daughter Shazahn is a hot property in Bollywood these days. She is making her debut in Yash Raj's upcoming flick 'Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year' opposite Ranbir Kapoor.

Yash Raj has always been popular for the secrets they keep of the actresses and this time also they tried their best to keep their new lass away from the media glare. But a little birdie from the sets reports that Shazahn is very freindly with Prateik Babbar who often drops in on locations.

Adds the source, "The youngsters have a lot in common - both come from families of actors. Moreover, the two started off in Bollywood around the same time. They also stay close by to each other in Bandra and share several common interests."

When asked about Prateik, Shazahn says, "He is a close friend. I have known Prateik for eight years. We are in the same age group; I am 21, he is 22 and we are part of a group that hangs out together. In fact, our families go a long way back. My dad not only knew Prateik's mom but also knows her sister (Manya).."

Adds Prateik, "As far as I can remember, I have not been on the sets of Rocket Singh. Shazahn and I know each other well. In fact, we've grown up together."

The reason why Babbar boy finds her so special is that just like her eminent theatre personality dad and singer mom, Shazahn is keen about drama and acting.

She has acted in the play ‘Unspoken Dialogues’ which turned out to be very successful. She has also helped her parents with the production of plays, was also chosen by FHM India to be a FHM girl, shot a hot photo shoot with them and had a stint with the ramp too.

The buzz is that Shazahn was supposed to be launched by Vivek Vaswani but a Bollywood start in an YRF project seemed more exciting for her.

If everything goes well, this promising young actress could very well be a threat to many existing ladies of B-Town

Randeep Hooda - Swinging Between Love & Lust

He has got every element of what an actor has to have in him- Looks, attitude and oodles of talent make this actor, stand apart.

From Deshu in super serious D Company to 18 stupendous roles in Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aaye, Randeep surely has come a along way, and now is hitting back with a bang with his forthcoming film Love Khichdi.

The ex-beau of ever-sensuous Sushmita Sen will be seen surrounded by many girls namely- Riya Sen, Sonali Kulkarni, Divya Dutta, Rituparna SenGupta, Kalpana Pandit and Sada. The film is slated for a August 28 release.

In a candid interview, Randeep Hooda talks about love and lust, on and off-screen!

So many girls surrounded you; they must have really showered you with attention. How did it feel getting wooed by so many women?
Well, it’s not girls who are wooing me, except for Riya’s character. In fact, it’s my character that discovers the true meaning of love.

His definition of love is limited to lust, which he has for all the girls, including his bai played by Sonali Kulkarni. He goes through these seven beautiful experiences and comes across the real definition of love. So, the entire female characters; except for Riya, who is in love with me have got equal share of attention and wooing.

Have you ever been wooed by so many girls in real-life?
(Blushes) Without sounding boastful- Yes, I am used to loads of attention from the opposite sex, and I enjoy it.

Is that so… do tell us about any particular incident?
Well, that’s something I would like to keep under wraps. Honestly, I am a little skeptical and scared of whether my building residents will let me enter the building after watching this film.

You were heard of being slapped by Divya Dutta on the sets while shooting for a funny scene…any other incident that tickles your funny bone or brings a smile on your face?
Well, another lady Sada slapped me too. Sada’s character slaps me while shooting on Worli sea-face. My three and half year old nephew was present on the sets, along with my mother.

As soon as Sada slapped me my nephew immediately reacted and turned to mother saying, “Nani Nani yeh ladki toh gayi, Mamu isse banduk nikalkar maar denge” (Grandmother, this girl is gone, Uncle will shoot her with a pistol). We had a big laugh on that incident.

Another incident was when Kalpana was to join me in the bed in a particular scene. And she ends up bringing a whip along to beat me. I had a hearty laugh at the sight, which was so embarrassing though.

There has been a transition in your acting from some super serious roles to some lovey-dovey kinds. Was it a deliberate effort or just a coincidence?
See, serious genre of films is my forte. However, an actor is an accomplished one if he is versatile, something which gives an actor an edge over others. So, it’s very important to experiment in different genres. I have different shades of traits in my persona, which I experiment with, in reel-life.

Tell us about the other projects in pipeline?
Karma Aur Holi, Kusar Prasad Ka Bhoot, Once Upon a Time in Mumbai, Rang Rasiya- Colors of Passion are some films which are lined up for this years release.

Coming back to Love Khichdi, what do you think is the USP of the film?
Reality driven script, and most important- loads of talking with the camera; it’s a very interactive film, where audience would be involved throughout.

Giselle Monteiro Destined To Play Harleen Kaur

Brazilian beauty Giselle Monteiro has been winning accolades for her role as Harleen Kaur in Love Aaj Kal. Her Indian looks have won her fans galore as well. Giselle says she was destined to come to India and play a role.

“My dad used to call me Indian when I was a kid and sing songs for me on India,” she says.

"But the actual inspiration started from an Opera that we have in Brazil,” Giselle reveals. “The soap opera has sparked a mini India boom in Brazil,” she further adds. Giselle who is a big fan of the soap opera says the cultures, the traditions and the colors of India have had a huge impact on her.

“The Opera known as Caminho das Indias (Way of the Indias) telenovela, with Hindi phrases thrown into the Portuguese dialogue, has piqued Brazilians' interest.

Hindi phrases, yoga, meditation and Indian dance are emphasized on the show,” informs Giselle. So much so, that Giselle has also taken to Yoga as a hobby now and she is learning how to cook Indian food.

The Opera, says Gisele, is woven in a story form, like most Brazilian soaps and is told in grueling 200 or so episodes, over more than six months. "Love stories of a low caste boy Bhuvan and a beautiful high-caste woman Maya are very popular in this opera,” she adds further.

"The novela shows the respect in India for the elders of a family, which isn't always the case in the West," says the Brazilian model.

“I didn’t get to see many episodes, since they started and I had to leave Brazil. But I follow it up on the youtube regularly,” she says with a smile.

For now Giselle may be missing the soap opera, but she certainly seems to have made a place for herself in the hearts of her fans in India.

Shah Rukh Mil Gaya!

It is common knowledge that Shah Rukh Khan will make a guest appearance in Dulha Mil Gaya, produced by close friend, Vivek Vaswani. But did you know his guest appearance lasts for an hour, in the two and half hour film? The buzz is that Shah Rukh is not happy with his role getting extended so much so, that he didn’t want to complete shooting for the film.

However, producer Vivek Vaswani has rubbished these reports and informed that they have not added or subtracted any scenes with Shah Rukh. Whatever was narrated to him has been filmed. He has 17 scenes and three songs. One of the music videos is yet to be shot with the entire cast. Since Shah Rukh is doing Dulha Mil Gaya as a favor for a friend, he is being credited as a guest appearance. Vaswani also thinks that getting credited, as a guest appearance does not depend on the length of the role. He gives the example of Sunny Deol in Damini. Similarly, he feels that while Shah Rukh is not part of the main cast, his role is equally powerful as that of the others. SRK will be seen promoting the film along with the other cast members.
